ICT centre develops young entrepreneurs

EIGHT interns from the Brunei Solutions Development Centre (BSDC) Capability and Mentoring Programme (CAMP) graduated and are now certified in one of the highest qualifications available in the IT industry.
In total eleven interns have graduated from CAMP since BSDC’s establishment in 2013, and are now qualified as Microsoft Certified Software Developers.
The BSDC graduation ceremony held yesterday for the graduates of CAMP was officiated by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Mohammad Yasmin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Energy and Industry Department Under the Prime Minister’s Office Mohd Norshafiee DPH Abdul Jalil said CAMP offers an accelerated training programme for interns to become Microsoft Certified Solutions Developers (MCSD) within a year instead of the standard two years, allowing them to move into entrepreneurial roles with greater speed.
“Prior to the establishment of the BSDC there were no Bruneian Microsoft Certified Software Developers. However, there are now eleven locals with this highly prestigious and industry-recognised certification,” he said.
He said the government is focusing on economic diversification and promoting entrepreneurship.
“These interns are a role model for other graduates who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs and it also demonstrates that the BSDC is a proven working model for ICT industry development in Brunei Darussalam,” he said.
Mohd Norshafiee said plans are in place for closer collaboration with Darussalam Enterprise to support CAMP and produce successful entrepreneurs.
Siti Nor Izuana Ayob, one of the new graduates and founder of a new ICT company that will be working with BSDC, said CAMP’s training was extensive. She also had the opportunity to engage with Microsoft consultants and experts around the world.
“The most exciting of all is the exposure to real life projects. To become a part of national level projects such as PSC (Public Service Commission) recruitment (and the) Land Application Registration Information System is an added bonus for our portfolio,” she said.
The BSDC was set up in 2013 as a software development facility to propel growth in the ICT industry. The centre offers opportunities for local partners to work with Microsoft through hands-on and practical work immersion and procedures.
Besides being managed by Microsoft, the centre works hand-in-hand with the E-Government National Center and iCentre in implementing the e-government programme and developing the ICT industry as a key economic driver in line with Wawasan 2035.
